Thelma Hut

A backcountry hut high in the San Juans, off the Million Dollar Highway — backdoor access to world-class terrain, with the comforts of home.

The hut

High, remote, and dialed

Thelma sits at 11,200 feet between Silverton and Ouray, off US-550. It's a genuine high-alpine hut with backdoor access to skiing, climbing and alpine lakes — but you're never roughing it: a wood-fired sauna, running water, an indoor toilet, and Starlink wifi when you need it. Book a guided trip and meals are handled too.

Take the whole hut with your crew, or book by the bunk. We run Thelma lean, in partnership with established local guides.

Getting there

Access & seasons

Part drive, part earn-your-turns. We send detailed directions, parking and conditions before every trip.

Summer · drive to the door

In normal summer conditions it's a short ~0.5-mile 4×4 approach right to the hut. Days are for hiking, biking, trail running, alpine-lake fishing, and town runs to Silverton or Ouray.

Winter · skin in

In winter it's a mandatory ~0.5-mile skin-in by ski, splitboard or snowshoe (no snowmobiles). Backcountry skiing, splitboarding and ice climbing are right out the door. Parking at the US-550 trailhead is limited — carpool.

Avalanche terrain. Winter access crosses avalanche terrain. A beacon, shovel and probe — and the training to use them — are required. Not sure? Book a guide through one of our partners and let the pros lead.
